Summer Evening Literacy Camp at Beehive Upstairs
For Rising 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders
We know the challenges of needing to keep up with academics over the summer AND the social benefits of a traditional summer camp. We know summer slide but also know the immeasurable benefits of having a fun, creative, boundary-less outdoor summer. We also know, deeply, the importance of supporting our students, keeping up with their academic goals and getting them prepared for the next school year. Our new (and one-of-a-kind) program is designed to marry the summer-fun bliss with getting and staying ready for the next school year.
Daily from 4PM-7PM, campers will explore books, play literacy games and get individual and group tutoring on their reading and writing goals. Designed to meet students where they are while getting them ready for the upcoming school year, our literacy camp will be calm, supportive and engaging. Kids will eat pizza (or packed dinner) and enjoy an evening of learning and fun!
Reader’s Theater, a teacher go-to for fluency, noticing punctuation, reading with expression, and comprehension work, will be a big part of our program with the plays and parts tailored to the strengths and needs of our campers.
As a community hub, Beehive Upstairs hopes to support big kids and their families in their quest to love and find success in learning. Rachel, owner of Beehive, is a current classroom teacher in first and second grade, a certified reading specialist and a certified ESL teacher. She has taught for many years in Philadelphia and attended UVM for Elementary Education and the University of Pennsylvania for her MS Ed. in Language and Literacy. In designing this program, Rachel and her team are thinking deeply about science of reading and are using the most up to date research to inform lessons, book choices and more.
